A MAPPING OF ITALY

A cultural and artistic exploration of the territory through some  of Italy’s most beautiful mosaic icons: a set of fragments that,  assembled and coordinated in a visual and audio story-telling  language - and through different media - reconcile individual  stories with collective ones and vice versa. Attention is focused  not only on the cultural assets described and individual artistic  expressions, but also, and even more so, on the underlying territory and the relationships, the intangible knowledge, and  the legends and symbols it is home to.

THE EXHIBITION STATIONS

In a journey touching on :

  • Rome

  • Pompeii

  • Aquileia

  • Ravenna

  • Palermo

  • Monreale

  • Piazza Armerina

In a narrative  embracing the different sites and the Farnesina Collection, the  stories of the ancient, the modern and the contemporary worlds  unfold.

True theatrical stage machines whose surfaces are clad with  novel marvels: gold, symbols and allegories, domes, walls and  floors, lit up by a polychromy of tesserae, populated by  characters, starry skies and constellations, arabesques, dolphins,  labyrinths and battles that give the visitor's eyes a sense of  reverential bewilderment.

Alliance for New Music Theater and Bel Canto in Tuscany

Alliance for New Music Theater and Bel Canto in Tuscany

While Dupont Underground features “MOSAICO |Italian code of a timeless art," Alliance for New Music-Theatre is pleased to return to this historic and evocative venue to complement the stunning visuals of the exhibition with its own concurrent exploration of Italian history and culture through word and song.

Partnering with friends from Bel Canto in Tuscany for this rich opportunity, the two organizations are offering a collection of Italian hidden musical and literary gems, designed to complement the varied themes presented in the exhibition.

Lesser-known treasures by Respighi, Tosti, Santoliquido, Pizzetti, Dallapiccola, and more, are uncovered and put on display in original Italian by mezzo-soprano Cara Schaefer and tenor Victor Robertson with renowned international conductor, pianist, and opera educator Giovanni Reggioli at the piano.

Woven throughout the musical exploration, New Music-Theatre’s Artistic Director Susan Galbraith offers English interpretations of works by great Italian poets from across the region, in an ode to its land and culture and transcendent values of love and beauty, expressed through the incomparable imagery of Dante, Petrarch, and their compatriots.

In this multi-sensory environment, the audience is transported to another time and place, immersed in sights, sounds, words, and feelings that are uniquely Italian and simultaneously universal.

Tickets are $20-$30

PROJECTION OF EXHIBITION
1989 | The Velvet Revolution – End of Totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia
The exhibition brings together iconic photographs by 15 leading Czech photographers capturing ground-breaking moments in modern Czech history as the communist dictatorship ended after 40 years: the demonstration against the totalitarian regime in 1988, Palach’s Week in January of 1989, Nov. 17, 1989, and the thrilled atmosphere that followed. The exhibit includes a set of photographs from the departure of the Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia in 1990-91, which brought the Velvet Revolution to its conclusion. The exhibition is curated by Dana Kyndrová.

VELVET REVOLUTION
Historical Background: On November 17, 1989, a student march in Prague marked the 50th anniversary of International Students’ Day, the day a young student was killed by the Nazis during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. As the students moved towards the center of the city, the riot police brutally attacked them. In response, hundreds of thousands of citizens found the courage to take to the streets to protest the suppression as well as the ruling communist regime itself. As the mass demonstration grew with each day and spread throughout the country, the stage for the dissident political movement Civic Forum was set. The communist regime fell and democracy was reinstated. The courageous dissident, prisoner of conscience, and talented playwright Václav Havel became the tenth and last President of Czechoslovakia and later the first President of the Czech Republic.

Jan Kaláb created the huge graffiti art in the Dupont Underground featuring the date 17.11.1989 (please note: dates are listed reverse in the Czech Republic). The date of November 17, 1989, was the start of the Velvet Revolution, which toppled communism and led the country back to freedom and democracy.

Czech artist Jan Kaláb (1978) was one of the pioneers who started bringing urban art into Central and Eastern European countries after the borders opened in the early 90s. As a founder of the DSK crew, he made a name for himself throughout Europe as “Cake.” Later, he decided to broaden his horizon and move to New York where he changed his name to “Point” and started creating huge sculpted abstract letters, which he chose to put up in the streets and on walls. He thereby created another form of graffiti without a spray can, but truthful to the spirit of competition and innovation of the urban scene. These letter sculptures led him on a path towards total abstraction. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he developed a more geometric style. He uses colorful squares and circles as his vocabulary for infinite variations around depth, time, and motion. Having gained recognition over the past years, Kaláb is on his way to a promising career as an abstract artist. He currently exhibits his work throughout the world.

Dance Performance and Discussion: 'Breaking the Spell' of Social Media

Social media can entertain, inform, and foster community. Memes and #trending dances can connect people of all ages, around the world. But given their overtly addictive nature, possibility for manipulation and spreading disinformation, debates about the dangers and regulation of platforms and technologies are raging in democracies, including both Germany and the USA.

Into these consequential debates—LEAP—the Flying Steps, Berlin's world-renowned, quadruple breakdance world champions and founders of Germany's biggest urban dance school, the Flying Steps Academy. Returning to the U.S., the Flying Steps will use the global language of dance to ignite discussions on pressing questions at the intersection of digital technology, individual wellbeing and democratic futures.

'Breaking the Spell'—therein lies the key, as the Berlin-based breakers' new "Flying Hänsel und Gretel" program offers a modern twist on the classic fairy tale by reinterpreting key elements to fit contemporary societal issues. Hänsel and Gretel are not lured with sweets, but with the promise of fame and attention through social media. Please join the German Embassy and Flying Steps for a spectacular night featuring an awe-inspiring dance performance inspired by their new program followed by thought-provoking discussion with experts on the challenges of social media.

Program:

1. Flying Steps dance performance inspired by "Flying Hänsel und Gretel"

2. Panel discussion

3. Reception with light refreshments

Panelists:

Stefan Lechermann: One of the managing directors of Flying Steps Entertainment, which under his leadership has grown into one of the most successful urban dance companies worldwide, he has played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of innovative cultural and educational projects that integrate dance and education.

Dr. Leticia Bode: Professor in the Communication, Culture, and Technology master’s program at Georgetown University, and the inaugural Research Director for the Knight Georgetown Institute which seeks to connect independent research with technology policy and design, her research lies at the intersection of communication, technology, and political behavior, emphasizing the role communication and information technologies may play in the acquisition and use of political information and misinformation.

Patrick Lyden: Founder of CurrentStrategic, a government relations, business development, and strategic initiatives firm based in Washington, DC, which represents two important actors in the child online safety policy space, the Children and Screens Institute and BrightCanary.

Samuel Johannes (Moderator): Program Manager at the National Democratic Institute with over 12 years of experience as a practitioner of democracy and governance-focused programming in Central and Eastern Europe, his areas of expertise include youth political participation, building resilient transatlantic institutions and countering foreign authoritarian influence.

About the Flying Steps:

The Flying Steps have made it from a cardboard box up onto the world's great stages - an extraordinary success story from Berlin!

More than 35 of the world's best dancers, 20 years of experience, 2 simultaneous tours and numerous productions for companies and brands have made Flying Steps Entertainment the most successful company in developing urban dance shows and individual show concepts.

What started on a cardboard box on Berlin's Kurfürstendamm in 1993, today takes place on the gleaming parquet floors of the world's greatest stages. Whether in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, in the Burgtheater in Vienna, in the Orchard Hall in Tokyo or in the Teatro della Pergola in Florence – with their shows the Flying Steps have toured through more than thirty countries.

In 2010 the Flying Steps' first feature-length show paved the way for this success. With Flying Bach they revolutionized breakdance by being the first to show the artfulness of this dance style and by similarly appealing to all age groups. Their new feature "Flying Hänsel und Gretel" offers a modern twist on the classic fairy tale by reinterpreting key elements to fit contemporary societal issues. In this urban dance adaptation, one of the most striking changes is how the witch lures Hänsel and Gretel—not with sweets, but with the promise of fame and attention through social media.

Las Muertes Mas Bellas del Mundo - The Most Beautiful Deaths in the World: Film Screening

1980 marked the beginning of an exodus of Salvadorans fleeing a US-backed war, with tens of thousands of people making the Washington, DC, region their new home.

This mass migration gave birth to a new artistic movement. Using the corner of 15th & Irving Streets in NW DC as their home base, artists brought meaning to a uniquely Salvadoran-Wachintonian identity.
In the process, they shaped the city’s vibrant, longstanding, and thriving cultural scene.

Las Muertes Más Bellas del Mundo tells a story of the Salvadoran diaspora’s struggles and humanity through the eyes of artists who created art out of war.

The film follows a poet’s journey to find acceptance and healing through his writing of Las Muertes and interweaves a collection of Salvadoran-Wachintonian artist portraits – a poet, a photographer, a dancer, and musicians.

Collectively, their voices and archival images tell a compelling, intimate, and historically-grounded story of a community resolving trauma and finding identity, salvation, and joy.
