Rome Underground
Short film and ballet to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Pride celebrations in Washington DC
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Pride celebrations in Washington DC and WorldPride 2025, the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington presents “Rome Underground”, an evening in the company of Roma Pride President Mario Colamarino, the choreographer of The Washington Ballet Mimmo Miccolis, and the dancers and artists of The Washington Ballet and “Divas in Drag – Italian Opera Company”. This event, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Washington and Dupont Underground, intends to be a celebration of Italian culture and a powerful homage to human diversity in all its forms: gender, identity, expression, body, emotion, and worldview.
Join us for the screening of “Rome World Pride 2000 - In Pride We Trust”, the original short movie dedicated to the first World Pride event, hosted by Rome in 2000, directed and created by Mario Colamarino. Mario Colamarino, spokesperson for Roma Pride, will share unpublished videos and images from the archives of the Circolo di Cultura Omosessuale Mario Mieli of Rome, bringing to life the stories and struggles of the people who made that historic event possible.
The evening will be complemented by a ballet conceived by Mimmo Miccolis, an exclusive performance titled “HEROICA”. This danced act of resistance, remembrance, and pride merges Italian opera with bold contemporary music — from Verdi to Måneskin — and builds an emotional and symbolic bridge between past and present.
